Would like to thank Nanette daughter Nicky for giving me permission and contributing photos to this article and Mr Ignacio Dee for his insight as a long time follower of Track and Field in this country

..

Nanette Lusterio passed away August 13, 2012 at the young age of 58. Lusterio came to be known as the pride of Alubijid (not far from Cagayan De Oro) in Northern Mindanao. Representing NMRAA in local, regional and national school meets. A women who truly loved representing her country and the sport of Track and Field. Mrs Lusterio was overshadowed by other great athletes of her time her career spanned the entire 1970s. However Nanette holds her own place in Philippine Track and Field History. Her feats include the fact she held the Philippine Junior Record (1.63m) in the Junior Womens High Jump for 21 years from 1972 to 1993. A very popular and charismatic athlete who will be dearly missed by her friends, her peers firmly believe she deserves a place among the greats of our sport.

nanette lusterio

Nanette Galaritta Lusterio was born on June 12, 1954 in Alubijid, Northern Mindanao  the daughter of Nicasio Lusterio Sr. and Pureza.  Emerging as a talent in both the 100m Hurdles clocking 15.5s at the Malaysian Open and High Jump in the early 70s. The then 18-year old Lusterio who stood at 5’6 set a Philippine Junior record in the womens High Jump of 1.63m which stood 21 years until it was broken in 1993 by Chery Ann Janiva (1.64m). In 1974 she went onto equal the Palarong Pambansa High Jump Record of 1.64m.

Shot put

Like the Discus the national record has remained untouched in this event set by Consuela Salibis-Lacusong 37 years ago in Cebu City.

Veteran Heptathlete Narcisca Atienza, topped the High Jump, Heptathlon and Shot put ranking lists this  year. Atienza (12.09m) was the only shot putter over 12 and 11 meters this year. The Shot put is still an event the Philippines is weak at with no medal chance at SEA Games for a long time.  Atienza was followed by five juniors Sombilla, Tan, Terpstra ,  De Oro, and Isada who have thrown over 10 meters.

Sombilla and Tan finished first and second at the UAAP. Terpstra won the Junior title at the National Games and De Oro the Palaro Pambansa title.

This year eight athletes threw over 10m, compared to five last year. The standard for next years ranking increased from 9.50m to 9.80m.

33 year-old Rosie (‘arr’) Villarito continued her dominance in this event with a seasons best of 48.84m.  Villarito who was second at the Last SEA Games, is the 2009 SEA Games Champion.

Emerging junior Evalyn Palabrica was the most prominent Javelin Thrower this season however improving her best throw to 41.55m and then breaking Villarito Junior Record (44.54m) which had stood since 1998 with a 44.73m to win the UAAP and then representing the Philippines for the first time at the ASEAN Uni Games finished behind the SEA Games Gold Medalist from Indonesia with a throw of 45.43m again breaking her own Junior Record.

SEA Games silver medalist in the Heptathlon Narcisca Atienza was third (43.68m) this year on the rankings .

The emergence however of several promising juniors such as 18 year-olds Palabrica, and 2011 Palaro Champion Stephanie Cimatu (40.18m) and Fil-Heritage athlete Cerah Moren (38.42m) who is 13, showed that their is likely continuity of success in this event.

The Criteria for the Javelin this year was 36m, eight athletes exceeded this mark compared to five last year. The standard for 2013 rankings stays at 36.00m.

Discus

Maika De Oro one of the future stars of Philippine Athletics.

Maika De Oro one of the future stars of Philippine Athletics.

For 47 years Big ‘Joe’ de la Vina has held the national junior and 41 years the senior record in this event. The last athlete to win a medal at the SEA Games was now national coach Roselyn Hamero.  The only athlete to throw over 40 meters since then has been Maikahn De Oro who registered 40.25m at the 2011 Palaro in Dapitan. The 18-year old De Oro from Bacolod leads the charge again this time with 38.96m to win the Junior title at Dumaguete.

19 year-old Twinkle Masilang (DLSU) is the UAAP Champion with 37.11m #9 all time lists. As the Discus and Shot put are events which athletes peak at a later age it is difficult with the retirement of collegiate athletes such as Judelyn Capistrano (RTU) and Micah Sibayan (Ateneo) to maintain continuity in these events.

Ira Mae Hernandez (UE) also improved her best throw to 36.88m.The Standard for this event was 30m but this is now increasing to 32.37m in 2013.  In 2011 only four athletes exceeded 32m, this year it was ten.

Hammer

Loralie Sermona

Loralie Sermona

Another veteran dominated this event which is the case in throwing events where athletes can peak into the 30+ age range. 31 year old SEA Games Bronze Medalist Loralie Amahit Sermona improved her national record to 50.23m. Read about it here. She was well clear of UAAP Champion Kenneth Grace Ferrera (FEU) whose 37.79m fell slightly short of the UAAP Record of Annabell Sioson.

The standard for Hammer was 27m in 2012, however it will be raised to 28m in 2013. Eight athletes threw over 29m in 2012 compared to six in 2011.

Eleven Men Long Jump over Seven Meters in 2012!

Henry Dagmil

2012 has been the best season in terms of depth ever in terms of athletes over seven Meters.  With just four in 2011, and three in 2010 and five in 2009. Leading the list again is Olympian and National Record Holder Henry Dagmil (7.71m). He is followed by 2011 SEA Games Bronze Medalist Benigno Marayag (7.37m) and Triple Jump National Record Holder Joebert Delicano (7.24m) the trio finished in that order at the National Games.

A group of youngsters followed the three veteran jumpers. Juliam Reem Fuentes (7.29m) the Palaro Record Holder now at CSB.  Nino Espinosa 7.15m silver at the vietnam open last year (7.42m PB),   decathlete and run for change’s Jesson Ramil Cid (7.08m) SEA Games 400m Silver medalist Archand Bagsit (7.06m to win NCAA),  Uni Games Champion Mark Fabro (7.06m),  Uni Games Silver Medalist Harry Diones (7.06m), and 18 year-old Uni Games Bronze medalist Janry Ubas (7.01m), and Jebbie Rebucas of WVRAA (7.00m).

The rise in depth in this event means the criteria to be ‘Ranked’ next year means a standard raised from 6.80m to 7.00m.  Very good depth as well as four of the top ten of all time are currently active with 7.35m being the criteria to make the top ten.

A leap of 7.00m or over is required to make the ranking lists in 2013, this was 6.80m for this year.

.

Triple Jump Mens

Jumping Joe leads the Mens Ranking List

SEA Games veteran and National Record Holder Joebert Delicano marginally leads the Triple Jump list with 15.20m. 32 year old Delicano holds the Phil record at 16.12m. It will take another new national record for Delicano, as SEA Games bronze standard is 16.14m this shouldn’t be too far out of his reach.

Upcoming Ernest Ybanez of Cebu showed a return to form with 15.08m, just 3cm off the leap he registered to win the Junior National Title in 2010. Magcusang and Ubas were new comers to this list. While the Diones brothers finally broke long standing personal best performances at the Uni Games. The set standard remains at 14.00m for 2013.

High Jump: Lasangue qualifies for SEA Games

Manuel aka. JR Lasangue

Last year three jumpers all cleared 2.00m, this year only Lasangue who led the list has managed to achieve that feat again. Lasangue from Iloilo improved his best leap which was established way back in 2010 when he won the University Games for WIT. His leap of 2.10m is good enough to make the SEA Games bronze medal standard. Albeit according to the SEA Games ranking list he will need to jump 2.15m+ who actually win a SEA Games medal.

Despite balancing a busy full time job at Meralco, Lasangue switched back from Decathlon to High Jump and the change back has paid off with a SEA Games qualification. Lasangue is coached by National Record Holder Sean Guevarra who also hails from Iloilo.

Ray Cris Capispan and Andrew Wilson who both leapt 2.00m, seem to have faded out of the picture this year with leaps of 1.97 and 1.90m.

The top new comer this year is Janry Ubas who has improved his best leap to 2.00m at the UAAP he won the high jump in 1.95 and surprisingly cleared higher during the decathlon, albeit the 18 year old is very far from the immortal junior record of Fil-Heritage Luis Juico 2.16m which has stood untouched since 1987.

Also on the list is SCUAA Champion (400m runner) Christopher Demata , PRISAA Champion Gavin Genil and National Junior Champion Jayson Calpa.

The criteria cut off for the high jump is 1.90 for 2012 and 2013.

Two Fil-Heritage Vaulters begin journey for the SEA Games

Caleb Monticalvo

The Discovery of two Fil-Heritage Jumpers who ranked second and third in SEA Rankings this year has breathed new life into an event which has not won a gold medal since Edward Lasquette in 1995.23 year old Caleb Monticalvo (5.03m) who competes in Division 2 from California and 22 year old Julio Alorro (4.91m) from New Jersey who competes in Division 3 in the States will get there season under way in a few weeks with their quest to regain the glory for the Philippines in this event.

Former SEA Games representative 30 year old Jerome Margallo is well behind with a 4.56 indoor jump and a no jump at the National Games. National Junior record holder 17 year old EJ Obiena also has a 4.41 indoor leap. While Masters record holder and National Champion Emerson Obiena has leapt 4.38m indoors.

.

Obiena Breaks Junior Records Multiple Times

The future of men’s pole vault in the Philippines looks very bright thanks to the well established Philippine Pole Vault Club and there supporters. If the performances of two new fil-heritage discoveries show promise for the 2013 SEA Games. The event is truly in very safe hands with another upcoming star EJ Obiena the son of veteran Pole Vaulter and Coach Emerson Obiena. EJ has broken the national record multiple times now taking the mark 4.25, 4.30, 4.40, and then 4.50 meters at the UAAP. The Ateneo freshman also broke the UAAP Record of Margallo set 6 years ago.

There is very good overall depth in the Pole Vault with half of the top ten vaulters of all time active this season with 12 jumpers leaping over 4.00m which is equal to last year with nine in 2010, and seven in 2009. Seven vaulters went over 4.20 compared to five last year. Due to this improvement the standard to make the list in 2012 now is 4.00m no longer 3.90m.

Adel Valdecenas also set a personal best and Gorby Pajardo put himself at #10 on the junior all time list.

1978 Palarong Pambansa

This is the next set of results I have available.  The 1978 Palarong Pamabansa was held in Cagayan De Oro.

Back in these times the Palarong Pambansa actually served as a sort of National Games with just two age grades senior and junior (supposed to be under 20). There was no high school and elementary grade. A lot of the time athletes competing in the junior division where actually ‘over-aged’ as no birth certificate checking system was in place.

.

Mens

Mens 1500m was won by 21 year old Nestor Trampe in 4:09.0, Trampe four years later went on to set the Phil Record in the 1500m of 3.49.96 a record which stood for eleven years. Wilson Elefante was second (4:09.8) later had a career best of 3:51.43.

The 5k was won by Arthur Alimbuyao in 15:07.4 (carrer best 14:49.92), second was Rosario Sarmiento 15:15.0. Alimbuyao also won the 10k in a slow time of 34:29.1 however it was good enough to establish a new meet record  (career best was 31:07.4).

Teodoro Dela Santa (NMRAA) won the 100m in a sluggish 10.9s.   Ruben Moreno who finished third in 11.0s, actually had a personal best of 10.6s from 1974.

In 400 Hurdles Angelito Aguilar (54.6) beat future legend Renato Unso (55.2).  Unso won the 110 Hurdles in 15.5 (later 14.76et), Arnel Lobos is 4th in 15.9. Unso also won the Triple Jump in 14.22m.

Bicol’s Santos Magno Jr. won the 400m (50.3) held a PB of 48.73 from 1974 but getting on a bit by this stage.  Aguilar of WVIRAA was second in the same time of 50.3. Ernseto Lace (typo actually Honesto) was last in 51.8.  Larce would later become a famous member of the Bicol Express 4x400m relay team which set the still standing national record in the 4×400 back in 1985 and improved his 400 PB to 48.01 four years later.  Oddly enough Bicol won the 4×400 in 3:27.4 with Larce and Magno in this original incarnation.  Magno would later enjoy a successful career as a coach of several provincial athletes who later made it to the national team.

RTU current coach Elmer Reyes won the High Jump in 1.89m which was a meet record at this meet. Prior to this in 1974 Reyes had leapt 2.02m which was his career best in Singapore.

26 Year old Susano Ereng threw the shotput  12.64m, three years later he threw 15.20m which stood as the Philippine Record for 12 years. Manuel De Oro finished second in the Javelin. Future Hammer record holder Agustin ‘Danilo’ Jarina threw 40.24m to win the discus from Ereng.

.

Womens

Lucila Salao-Tolentino won the 100 Hurdles in 15.2 (best was 14.3 back in 1972 as a junior).  Just holding off Nanette Lusterio (15.3).  Lusterio won the Long Jump in 5.09m.

The 100m was very much a race of veterans this year. The then 29 year old Lorena Morcilla who represented the old guard of sprinters who preceded De Vega Mercado won the 100m (12.4). Morcilla was a finalist in the 200m at Asian Games and was active into her 30s setting her best 100m time of 12.11et in 1980. Another veteran Carmen Torres who at this stage was already 30 but ran until her mid 30s was second in (12.6), Lilibeth Galvez who had a PB of 11.9 from 1972 was third in 12.7. 24 year old Gloria Acedo was fourth in 12.8 (best time was 12.0 the following year).  Tolentino finished fifth in 13.0. Auxellador Sacro finished last (relative of the Unso’s?)

In a closely fought 200m Galvez won in 26.0 from Torres 26.1 (career best was 24.8), and Morcilla 26.2 (24.5 the next year).  Torres won the 400m in 58.9 from Galvez 59.8 (Torres career bests of 58.3/58.51 were done at the sea games the year before).

Consuela Lacusong won the Shotput in 12.06m.  In 1975 Lacusong had broken the 5 year old record of Josephine Dela Vina with a 13.92m shot which still stands as the national record. She beat Terresita Toorabala at this meet 10.79m (who had a best of 11.97m in 1975). Laucsong also won the discus in 39.39m (best 41.75m 1975).

The Javelin was won by Erlindia Lavandia 42.95m who won four sea games title in this event 1977,1979,1981 and 1985.

Boys

Future national junior record holder Julio Bayaban had major improvements over the next 2 years. The 17 year old won the 200m in 23.1. Danilo Yarte (later 21.8) on this occassion finished last in the final in 24.8. Bayaban took the double with 11.1 in the 100m.

In the Hurdles future ex-national coach Alex Ligtas and former gun starter Danilo Arpon where both in the boys hurdle finals. Ligtas also finished third in the high jump.

In the 1500m and 3ks future national coach Mario Castro finished last in both these events.

.

Girls

18 year old Agrifina Dela Cruz won the 100 Hurdles in 16.5.  She later went on to collect a hat rick of sea games titles in 1983, 1985 and 1987. Salve Cambonga clocked a time faster than the winner of the seniors with 12.2, just edging Suzette  Gegaraya 12.3. Cambonga also won the 200m.

Mens and Womens Sprint Previews

Over the Next two weeks  Pinoyathletics will proudly present a series of event Previews for the UAAP. Pinoymiler will present the distance events, while Pinoyathletics will cover the sprints. We are still finalizing coverage of other event previews.

Leading up to the event which is scheduled December 4-7 at the Ultra, Pasig.

The events will go from 3pm to 9pm after the success of the trial of holding the event in the evening drew larger crowds from the public and ex-athletes.

You can view the schedule here

.

Mens 100m

Undoubtedly the blue ribband event of any Track and Field meet. There is nothing more compelling than seeing eight men burst down the track in all out display of raw speed and power. Gone are the days when are greatest champion and National Record Holder once dominated the sprints at the UAAP. Ralph Waldy Soguilon (DLSU) from 2000-2005 still holds the UAAP Record at 10.56. He was succeeded by Jeffrey Lozande 2006-07 and Romnick Herida 07-10 of FEU, and then Carlo Soriano 2011-12 of ADMU. With the sudden departure of Soriano from the UAAP scene this now leaves the title vacant with a new champion to emerge.

Jasper Tanhueco sprinter dlsu

Jasper Tanhueco won the Bronze last UAAP.

The two main candidates are the two men from DLSU Patrick Unso (11.07 PB) and Jasper Tanhueco (11.09 PB) who finished seem like the obvious candidates for the title of sprint King. Unso is the National and National Junior Record Holder in the 110m Hurdles, while Tanhueco is the NCAA High school Record Holder in the 100m.

However after the Thai Open Decathlete Jesson Ramil Cid is the fastest in the UAAP with 10.88 (the third fastest time in the RP in 2012. Cid will be hard pressed due to the number of events he is expected to participate in. The action and depth is clearly in the NCAA this year, with Unso and Tanhueco ranked #9 and #10 on the RP Mens Ranking List for 2012.

jesson ramil cid sprints feu

Cid in action at the PNG has the fastest 100m time of UAAP athletes this year

Unso had decided to focus most of this year on Hurdles, while Tanhueco finished third behind CSB (NCAA) Sprinters Daniel Noval and Anthony Lopena at the University Games last month in Bacolod.

The only other UAAP athlete who is even ranked is Abraham Alzona of UE with 10.9 hand which was done at the last UAAP in early Feburary.

.

Mens 200m

With time running short now as Pinoyathletics are the only ones covering the UAAP it is inevitable only the sprint events will be reviewed before the UAAP.

The next event we look at will be the Men’s 200m Dash. Last UAAP Patrick Unso (DLSU) spoiled defending Champion’s Carlo Soriano (ADMU) chances of defending his title. Soriano is now retired from the UAAP.

.

Unso Brothers lead the charge

Patrick Unso

The fastest man in UAAP Schools Isidro Del Prado (21.99) who was Bronze Medalist at the National Games is not eligible to participate for FEU until next year. Patrick Unso goes in as the fastest looking to defend his UAAP title which he had won in 22.12. The National and National Junior Hurdles Record Holder main opponent for the title will be his brother Jose Unso. Unso who made the final at this event last UAAP has had some impressive show of form during the weekly relay series. The last time Jose medalled in this event was back in 2010 when he won the bronze medal.

If any challenge is to come for the Unso Brothers it will likely be from Jesson Ramil Cid of FEU, who has a personal best of 21.7. Cid has won the last two University Games in this event having overcame Soriano and Daniel Noval the last two years. Cids massive improvement in the 400m this year makes him a very strong chance at stealing the show in the Mens 200m Dash.

2012 75th UAAP Sprint Reviews Women’s

100m Womens

The 100m Dash at the UAAP should be a very exciting race as it pits two evenly matched athletes in the hunt for the gold, and four athletes in the hunt for the medals.

Defending Champion Jennyrose Rosales (UE) who has added the National Junior title to her resume has not yet improved on her personal best of 12.34 she clocked to win the UAAP earlier this year. Since then Rosales has represented the country at the Asian Juniors in Sri Lanka and Thai Open. The small yet springy sprinter who just turned 18 will face her main challenge from the athlete she ran down on the line last year.

Hanelyn Loquinto

Hanelyn Loquinto

2011 UAAP Champion Hanelyn Loquinto (FEU) will be on a quest to regain her UAAP title that she lost to Rosales last UAAP. Loquinto who finished second at the National Games improved her personal best to 12.31 in Thailand, making her the fastest seeded entry in the womens 100m Dash.

maureen-schrijvers-dlsu-sprinter

DLSU Sprinter Maureen Schrijvers

Also in the mix will be Palaro and University Games Champion 17 year old Maureen Emily Schrijvers (DLSU) who holds a personal best of 12.68et/12.4ht. The tall sprinter from DLSU has had a rather up and down season but has been performing well at the big meets.

Also in the mix and looking at stealing a medal from one of the three favorites is UAAP Heptathlon Champion Mildrid Salut (FEU). Salut has demonstrated good ability in the sprints throughout the Weekly Relays. The muscular 23 year old now in her final UAAP may bag a sprint medal in her final year. On times Salut is tied with Mau this year with 12.68et/12.4ht, however has not participated in as many sprint events.

Also in the mix will be Ruffa Bargola (UP) and Avegail Dizon. Bargola who was controversially given the silver over Dizon at the Uni Games in Bacolod,(although camera footage showed otherwise after the event). Bargola Is not ranked but is a seasoned performer who is guaranteed a spot in the final. Dizon the third of the FEU Girls placed fourth last year and has ran 12.84et.

Rosales Closes in on UAAP 200M Record

jenny rose rosales filipino sprinter

Upcoming 18-year old Jennyrose Hernandez De Rosales. Has won three major titles in 200m, Palaro Pambansa 2011, UAAP and National Junior (Photo Credit: Enrico Quodala)

Defending UAAP Champion, proved she is in better shape after winning the UAAP title last January. Rosales who recently celebrated her 18th Birthday. Timed 24.6s at the Weekly Relays on November 25. Converted this only puts her behind Fil-Heritage Kyla Richardson on the Ranking Lists.

However she also has edged one step towards erasing a 30 year old UAAP record, held by none other than Lydia De Vega Mercado (24.5). The UAAP will take place Dec 4-7 at Pasig. Another legend has had a major impact in the shy UE students life is her coach Elma Muros Posadas who discovered the dusky Palaro 100-200-400 Champion at Dapitan.

Rosales who won the UAAP comfortably in 25.33 last January, went onto win the National Juniors, represent the Philippines in Asian Juniors in Colombo and Thailand Open. Although she didnt do too well in the individual events in Thailand she bounced back to score a convincing win in the Weekly relays against some of her rivals.

Probably more so in the 200 than in the 100 which there is a 50/50 chance Rosales is undoubtedly the overwhelming favorite in this event.

.

Close fight for the other medals

Following Rosales there is a gap of at least .4 seconds, followed by the next five sprinters who are separated only by .1 seconds. Here is a quick round up of the chances of the other potential medalists.

Josie Malacad (FEU), more of a 400m and 400m Hurdler but had a stunning win over Maureen Schrijvers at the Uni Games timing 25.5. Will probably have her hands full with longer events such as the 800m.

Hanelyn Loquinto (FEU), finished third behind Rosales at the UAAP in January timed 25.79. has not ran a 200m since then. Loquinto was the 200m Champion in 2011.

Maureen Emily Schrijvers (DLSU), won the Palarong Pambansa, ran good in Vietnam over 200m timed 25.74 and ran credibly at the Asean Schools. As of recently performances have not been consistent but ran a good 400m a few weeks back. She is the youngest in the field at 17.

Mildred Salut (FEU), the dark horse of the field, known as the UAAP Heptathlon Champion has shown incredible improvement this year and could barge into the medals timed 25.6 to place second against Rosales last week.

Neslee Angco (UE), the training partner of Rosales is also a very capable runner more known for the 400m, she is the Palaro and National Junior Champion. She timed 25.6 in the race behind Rosales and Salut last week.

.

400m: Malacad is the favorite

josie malacad filipino hurdler

In what is likely to be a very fast 400m Final. There are two names in contention. Undoubtedly this time though the odds on favorite is Uni Games 400m Champion Josie Malacad (FEU). Malacad who is better known as a Hurdler has had an incredible season improving her best time from 57.54 to 56.45 this year. In Vietnam she won the silver in 57.04. Before improving her best in the heats of Thailand to 57.03, and then taking a credible fourth place in 56.45 against a very strong international field. Malacad due to her 400m Hurdle background has a very graceful controlled style of running the 400m, which involves a well paced first 200m followed by a very rhythmic last 200m with evenly paced steps and good relaxation in the shoulders.

,

Rosales outside chance

Malacad finished second last year, and the other contender in the field although this year more of an outside chance is Jenny Rosales (UE). Rosales has a personal best of 57.4 which is also the Palarong Pambansa record from 2011. However she has not ran the 400m since last UAAP in March. She did however run a good leg in Thailand in the 4×400 to help the RP team to silver. While Rosales is looking comfortable in the 200m, she would have a better secondary chance in the 100m than 400m this UAAP.

Surely though Rosales will need to run alot faster than her winning time of 58.47 last year, the record in this event of Ana Leah Hugo set in 1997 of 56.61s is under threat. With Rosales sure to give Malacad the much needed push towards this mark.

,

The Best of the rest a very strong field

Rieveneth Penarubia feu hurdler

Rieveneth Penarubia

The strongest UAAP field assembled in 2010 saw all 8 women break 1 minute. Joining the field will be upcoming Rieventh Penarubia (FEU) the 16 year old has improved her best time to 58.4. Maureen Emily Schrijvers (DLSU) 58.8 better known in the short sprints. Rosales training partner Neslee Angco (UE) 59.3 the Palaro and National Junior Champion in this event. And the UST runners Rachelle Abotolomo 59.8 the Uni Games silver medalist, Vienna Mae Banebane who has not ran 400 well this year but has a personal best of 58.5 from last year, and Manelyn Clavejo the UAAP and Uni Games Bronze medalist.

Loquinto ties UAAP Record in Heats

Hanelyn Loquinto (FEU) was the quickest through the women’s heats on Tuesday winning the last of the three heats. Loquinto who is in her final year at the UAAP came into the competition with a best time of 12.33 from Thailand. The 2011 UAAP Champion timed 12.22s (+1.2m/s) to erase the six year old record of Sharon Jizmundo (FEU) by 1/100th of a second. Jenny Rosales (UE) defending UAAP champion in 12.34, established a new personal best of 12.25s winning the second heat. Palaro Champion Maureen Schrijvers (DLSU) won the opening heat in 12.76 to qualify fourth in the final.

Rosales defends title

It was a complete reversal to last UAAP when Loquinto was fastest out of the blocks, with Luville Dato-on and Jenny Rosales overwhelming her in the last 5 meters. This time Rosales was fastest out of the blocks and Loquinto began closing in on her in the last 20 meters, however Rosales had got a good enough start to hold her off. The rest of the field was well behind the first two placers with Mildrid three strides behind second.

After a valiant effort from Loquinto who threw everything she had into the final, it was 18 year old Jennyrose Rosales who would defend her title in 12.22 tieing the record Loquinto set in the heats. Loquinto took the silver with another good 12.29 time, and Mildrid tied her personal best to take the bronze in 12.68.

Palaro Champion Maureen Schrijvers was out of the medals fading to sixth place.

Two Pole Vault Records for EJ Obiena

EJ Obiena filipino pole vaulter

EJ Obiena

EJ Obiena (ADMU) shattered the UAAP Record of Jerome Margallo of Adamson which was set at 4.30m 6 years ago. It was inevitable the record was going to go as EJ had already reset his own junior record to 4.31m. A bone breaking injury set the 17 year old back and side lined him from the Palaro and the National Games. Upon recovery he soon was able to break the Junior Record again with 4.40 and 4.45 at the Weekly Relays. Having now raised that mark up again to 4.50m it ties him on the mens all time list at 10 just behind former Fil-Heritage vaulter Jose Utzurun. The first year Ateneo student is a strong candidate for the UAAP Rookie of the year reward. He is also participating in the High Jump event.

It was a young cast with Palaro Record Holder Adel Valdecenas (DLSU). 20 took the silver with 4.20m and defending UAAP Bronze Medalist Joel Nasis, 19 (UP) bronze with 4.00m., with Run for Change supported athlete Janry Ubas, 18 (FEU) finishing fourth but also joining the four meter club. This puts the number of Vaulters over 4.00m at 12, tying last years record.

Mens 110 Hurdles: There is an Unso among us!

Jose Unso dlsu hurdler

Jose Unso 14.84!

Defending Champion Patrick Unso who is coming off a hamstring injury was the fastest qualifier in the 110m Hurdles heats in 14.99 (-0.2). His brother Jose won the second heat in a Personal best of 15.12 (-0.2) improving on the 15.25 time he had ran to get the silver at the last UAAP. Emmanuel Delos Angeles (UST) also made a return to the UAAP with a personal best of 15.26, with Cid also qualifying in 15.27.

Jose again improved his personal best again winning the final in 14.84et (+0.3) a time which saw him rapidly advance to #6 on the all time list and 3rd on the seasonal rankings. His brother Pach holds the record and his father Renato is ranked 4th on the all time list (former record holder). (error reported 15.0x in previous report please disregard). Jose made the most of his final year in the UAAP beating his more well known Brother Pach who won the silver in 14.95. Jesson Ramil Cid (FEU) improved his PB to earn the bronze in 15.01. With former medalist Emmanuel Delos Angeles (UST) again improving to 15.20 but this time a well beaten fourth.

.

.

Mens 10k: Poliquit Just misses out

Rafael Poliquit

Rafael Poliquit

Rafael Poliquit (FEU) missed out on breaking the UAAP mens 10k record by an agonizing 4/100ths of a second. His winning time of 32:38.92 fell just short of the 32:38.88 mark set by Ben Alejandrino of UST six years ago. Poliquit who improved on his personal best of 32:44.87 when he finished sixth at the PNG continued his meteoric rise.

Richard Salano (UST) took the silver in 32:43.45 taking nearly a whole second off the time her registered at the PNG. Defending Champion Christopher Ulboc (FEU) ran faster than he did to win last year but this time it was only good enough for bronze. The three medalists who rank 4,5,6 on the 2012 rankings are all Run for Change supported athletes as was the fourth placer Roger Denolo (UST) who also improved his best time.

.

Mens 100m: Cid Claims 100m Title

The Mens 100m Heats saw some quick times. The First heat was won by Run for Change athlete Jesson Ramil Cid (FEU) in 10.90 +0.8, followed by Jose Unso (DLSU) who ran a personal best of 10.97. The second heat was won by 18 year old Jerwen Ebcas who ran a personal best of 11.13 +1.6.

In the Mens Final Cid was just .01 seconds off his personal best he ran in Thailand taking the mens 100m title in 10.89 +0.6 m/s. His time actually surpassed the UAAP ET Record with wind gauge used of 10.92 held by Romnick Herida in 2008. Jose Unso was second in 11.09, and Abraham Alzona (UE) bronze in 11.21.

.

Womens 100 Hurdles

.

Defending Champion Michelle Loterte (UST) was the fastest qualifier winning heat 2 in 15.30 (-0.2), .19 seconds off her personal best and .02 seconds faster than her winning time last year. She finished just ahead of the fast finishing Mildrid Salut (FEU) 15.47 who improved her personal best on the 15.53 she ran last UAAP to gain the silver.

The quickly improving teenager Leah Casilihan of DLSU who is mentored by national record holder Shyal Atilano won the third heat in 15.53 slashing .33 seconds off her personal best. The time puts Casilihan at #6 on the Junior all time lists, with Loterte currently in #4 spot.

19 year old Jee Ann Racoma (FEU) won heat 1 in 15.88. 2011 Silver medalist Aleah Gatmaitan of UE also qualified through with a time of 15.95.

In the final Michelle improved her personal best to 14.96, which saw her move to #3 on the all time junior lists. Mildrid Salut (FEU) was a very close second in 15.03 having knocked off half a second off her personal best this tournament and Leah Casilihan again improved her time for the bronze with 15.41. Gatmaitan was fourth in 15.84.

.

High Jump Womens

Joeann Bermudo equalled her personal best to take the women’s High Jump title with a 1.65m leap. Bermudo who was the bronze medalist last UAAP took the title in the absence of her more illustrious team mate Aprilen Laudencia the National Junior Record Holder who was the champion the last two UAAP. Palaro Record Holder and National Junior Champion Maureen Schrijvers (DLSU) was second in 1.60. Chairy Palermo (UST) who took the silver last UAAP was relegated to the Bronze with a 1.60m effort.

.

Mens 800m

Run for Change athlete Christopher Ulboc (FEU) qualified fastest to the finals of the Mens 800m, improving his personal best in the early stages of the weekly relays from 1.55.9 to 1:55.30. Ulboc who is better known as a 3k Steeple Chase runner is showing fantastic form in the middle distance events this year after losing his 10k title yesterday earning the bronze. 18 year old rookie Elbren Neri (UST) the Uni Games Silver medalist ran 1:56.60 just behind Ulboc, (he ran 1:55.7 at Uni Games).

Mary Ann Dela Cruz (FEU) reversed the finishing order upgrading her place to Gold with a 6 second personal best of 4:46.98. Pushing her to #2 in the 2012 rankings. Defending Champion Carmen Dalyn (FEU) also ran fast in 4:47.63 but had to settle for silver this time. 18 year old Macrose Dichoso (UST) was third in 4:52.86. Last years bronze medalist Jilla Dela Rosa faded to fifth place.

.

Boys Records Tumble

Kyle Davidson Narido (UE) established a UAAP ET Record winning Heat 3 of the Boys 800m in 2:06.24, the time however is very far off the hand timed Record of Oscar Alvarez (UP) 2:03.00. For purposes of my set of UAAP Records. For 800m and up hand timed records have .14 added. So in order to surpass the old record a time of 2:03.14 or faster would have been required.

The third record to go was in the Boys Discus Matt Crespo (ADMU) threw the Discus 33.39m. I am still checking on the weight of the Discus because they seem to have three different records in the event for 1.5, 1.75 and 2kg discus weights respectively.

.

Magic Mejia

15 year old Jaime Mejia of UP won the boys 100m easily in 11.38 (-0.1). He then added the boys 110 Hurdle title in a slick 15.25.

.

5K Walks

Mary Alice Dela Cruz (UE) the UAAP bronze medalist won gold this time in 29:30.63, 19 year old Jenelyn Surdilla (UST) took the silver in 29:40.13 (#2 junior all time), and Marygene Dagasdas, 19 (UE) the bronze in 29:56.43 (#3 all time junior list). Dela Cruz took the honors after her team mate April Pedrozo of UE failed to finish the race and last uaap silver medalist Janice Marquez faded to 7th place.

.

Womens Hammer

Defending Champion Jessah Fernandez of UST improved her best mark from 31.64 to 34.54 to easily secure her title. Ahead of Vanessa Baguiwet (ADMU) 30.59m and Lei Ann Tan (FEU) who improved her best to 29.37m.

Two Records Down One to Go. Rosales is in action in the 400m Today.

Yesterday, UAAP Champion Jennyrose Rosales (UE) was the fastest qualifier in the heats of the 200m taking out heat 3 in 24.98et which is the electronic record of the UAAP.

Rosales broke the ET Record of 25.22 set by Chantal Issey Balani of DLSU. The 18 year old who is trained by Elma Muros, jumped from #9 to #6 on the all time junior lists.

2011 Champion Hanelyn Loquinto (FEU) who hasnt ran over 200m since last February won heat 1 in a personal best of 25.61. Her team mate Mildrid Salut also improved her best to 25.90. Rosales team mate Angco ran a PB of 25.98 to advance aswell to the finals.

In the finals Rosales was clearly on a different plain of existence to the other sprinters. Pulling 6 meters away from her closest challenger to clock 24.73et and hence erasing the UAAP Record of Lydia De Vega Mercado (24.5ht). The time also pushed her back to regain the #1 spot on the 2012 ranking list. It was also the fourth fastest time ever by a Junior Sprinter. The 18 year old Rosales still has another year left in the junior division. Loquinto improved her best again to get silver in 25.58et. Uni Games Champion Josie Malacad was third in 25.74et. Mildrid Salut (FEU) was fourth in 25.83et. Palaro Champion Mau Schrijvers of DLSU faded to seventh place.

After tying the UAAP 100m Record, and claiming sole ownership of the 200m Record can Rosales make it three for three and break the National 400m Record of 56.61 today. Her best time is 57.4 which is the Palaro Record from 2011.

/

PAK! Palabrica breaks Rosie Villarito’s Junior Record

One of the highlights of the second day was Evalyn Palbarica (FEU) 44.74m heave in the the Javelin which erased the 14 year old National Junior Record of 2009 SEA Games Champion Rosie Villarito. Palabrica who is trained by Roselyn Hamero has shown good improvement this year in the Javelin. Palabrica finished well ahead of defending champion Jenefer Penepona who could only manage 36.54m. The UAAP Record of 46.12m is held by Maricris Gammag.

.

Run for Change Athletes Dominate Day 2

Run For Change sponsored Cid who first came to prominence at the UAAP breaking the decathlon record added the 200m title to his long jump and 100m. Cid recorded a new personal best of 21.82 (which is unofficially the fastest electronic time with a wind gauge recorded at the UAAP). Jose Unso who led for the first 150m and was overtaken by the fast finishing Cid captured the silver in 22.13 and his brother Patrick who was the surprise winner last UAAP settled for bronze in 22.31.

Another Run for Change athlete Christopher Ulboc won the mens 5k after losing his UAAP title in 10k, he won in 15:31.12 ,tightly contested by his FEU team mate Rafael Poliquit silver in 15:33.34, Richard Salano (UST) took the bronze in 15:37.84. All three athletes are Run for Change supported. The highly sort after record of UST Ben Alejandrino remains untouched.

Unso again!

Jose Unso was the fastest in the mens heats in 22.05, his time surpassed the Electronic (wind gauge) record of Romnick Herida (FEU) 22.06 set in 2008. It was otherwise a rather slow set of results apart from Cid (FEU) 22.07 to take out heat 4 which only had two other people in it.

upcoming 15 year old Jaime Mejia won the boys 200m in 23.13 just .11s outside the meet record.

,

FEU Girls strike more golds

Josie Malacad won her third title in the UAAP 800m in 2:18.67. It was a clean sweep for the FEU Girls with Dela Cruz 2nd and Carmen 3rd. UST Silver medalist Jilla Dela Rosa finished fourth and out of the medals.

While on the mens side Ulboc of FEU won the mens 800m in 1:54.54, just a tad outside of the UAAP Record of Nelbert Ducusin 1:54.2. 18 year old Rookie Elbren Nebri of UST took silver in 1:55.27 (#5 junior all time lists).

Joeann Bermudo defended her UAAP Triple Jump title with 11.97m, another cleansweep with Dizon 11.70m silver, and Salut 11.69m bronze. UAAP Silver medalist Michelle Loterte (UST) registered no valid jumps.

John Quiambao continued a strong tradition of UP men hammer throw champions winning the hammer in 37.23m. Following the legacy paved by Karl Francisco and Miguel Yuzon.

Kyle Davison Narida broke his 3k (et) record with a run of 10:00.65

Cid claimed the long jump title in 6.87m in what was a very poor performed series of jumps all round in the event. Defending champion Gerald Layumas (DLSU) was well below his personal best and finished fourth with 6.30m.

UAAP Day 3: Rosales goes three for three destroys 400m UAAP Record, Results (included)

uaap

Jenny Rosales of UE shatters the Womens 400m UAAP Record of Ana Leah Hugo (56.78 set 15 years ago). Video by Coach Roselyn Hamero. Rosales was named MVP after breaking the 100 ,200,400m records. (100 equalled with Hanelyn Loquinto (FEU) during heats of UAAP).

Rosales time here was 56.03 (with splits of 26.5/29.5 for each 200m)

.

.

Jenny Rose Rosales again re-wrote the History Books of the UAAP with a dominating win in the Womens 400m capturing her third UAAP Record. It is a feat which is only shared in UAAP History by Ralph Waldy Soguilon the holder of the Mens 100,200,400m records.

The 18 year old Rosales stopped the clock at 56.03 leaving her opponents gasping in disbelief. Uni Games champion Josie Malacad (FEU) who has a personal best of 56.45 was some 10 meters behind with a time of 57.96, while Palaro and National Junior Champion Neslee Angco the training partner of Rosales captured the Bronze Medal in 58.30.

Rosales time shattered the previous record of 56.78 by Ana Leah Hugo of FEU whose time had stood for 15 years. Her performance solidified positioning in the powerful womens 4×400 squad eyeing the sea games spot. It was also the second fastest time as a Junior ever only behind the long standing National Junior Record record of Lydia De Vega 54.75 set 31 years ago (this mark is also the National Record). It is also the sixth fastest time ever by a Filipino women with De Vega, Ganosa, Milgar, Punelas and Griffey ranked ahead.

.

Carmen Dalyn looking like Womens MVP

Carmen winning at the Uni Games.

Carmen winning at the Uni Games.

Despite Rosales triple record standing. It looks like Dalyn Carmen may become the UAAP Womens Champion. As UAAP Rules state Individual medals are counted ahead of Relay Golds. Carmen would have tied golds in the womens 3ks, 5k, 10k with Jenny who won the 100,200,400. However as she also has individual medals in the 800 and 1500 this puts her ahead for the MVP award. Dalyn added the Steeple Chase gold in a new personal best of 11:43.04.

Meanwhile the FEU Womens team of Hanelyn Loquinto, Josie Malacad, Mildrid Salut and Avegail Dizon broke the UAAP Record of UST with a time of 47.91 the second fastest relay time of the year.

m

Ulboc leads a medal sweep for Run for Change

Christopher Ulboc (FEU) defended his UAAP title int he 3ks improving his season best to 9:25.07, Salano (UE) got the silver and Denolo (UST) the bronze both improving there personal bests.

Baron Shines

Katrina Baron took the gold medal in the womens Pole Vault with 3.20m her performance was a huge personal best from the 2.80m she had previously registered at the Uni Games and when she formerly had the Junior Record. Her training partner Natasha Nalus was second with 3.10m improving on her junior record. The performances rank Baron and Nalus 5th and 7th on the all time lists for Filipina Pole Vaulters.

400M

Jaime Mejia (UP) continued to add to his gold medal count taking the Record in the Boys 400m in a time of 51.27. Erasing the 51.48 mark of Patrick Unso set two years ago.

Meanwhile in the Mens 400m Jesson Ramil Cid completed the sprint treble in 49.24. Cid who will be a shoo in for the MVP award was outside his 48.05 personal best but did enough to hold off the fast finishing Gabriel Soriano. Soriano (UP) the younger brother of former UAAP sprint king Carlo Soriano was the surprise silver medalist clocking a big personal best of 49.45 after only managing 23 flat in the 200m final. Jose Unso (DLSU) also medalled in the 100,200,400 with the bronze in 49.59.

.

Spectacular Throws

15 year old Joshua Patulad heaved the Javelin to a new mark of 54.29m which was good enough to rank on the mens Ranking List. His mark eclipsed the 21 year old Record of Illac Diaz of Ateneo.

Laurence Rose (DLSU) beat his team mate Palaro Record Holder Richie Cabanyog in the Shotput 12.95 to 12.53.

Unheralded Neil Borres (UST) was the surprise winner in the boys Triple Jump beating Uni Games Champion Janry Ubas (FEU) 14.37 to 14.30. Last years Champion Gerald Layumas (DLSU) was out of the medals in fourth.

It was the ninth win in a row for the women’s team. FEU Mens won with 390 points from UST 264 and DLSU 249. In the Womens FEU won with 534 points from UE 311 and UST 254. Cid in action

When the dust settled Jesson Ramil Cid again emerged as the MVP for the third year in a row. Cid won gold in the 100m,200m,400m, Long Jump and 4x100m relays.

UE Rookie Jenny Rose Rosales who broke the 100,200,400 records was the surprise winner after Jennismyle Mabunga of FEU beat her team mate Carmen Dalyn in the 5k.  The third gold would have allowed Dalyn to defend her MVP title, as Rosales next set of medals were in relays, whereas Dalyn had individual silvers in other events.  Rosales capped off a stunning UAAP teaming with Neslee Angco, Carmela Leonardo and Kristina Mae Santos to win the gold in the womens 4x400m relay.

The stunning surprise upset came in the Mens 4×400 when the DLSU quartet of Patrick Unso, Jose Unso, Jericho Ejercito and Timothy Kairuz toppled the FEU Juggernaut to win in 3:21.40. Jose later added the 400m Hurdles title to his 100 Hurdles crown in 53.59. Overpowering Cid who had beaten him in the 100/200/400m events and his own brother Patrick who ran 54.78 and 55.78.

Josie Malacad (FEU) won the 400 Hurdles title for the fourth time in a row with a time of 1:03.15. Albeit outside her personal best of 1:01.90 in Thailand. She just managed to hold off her team mate the impressive 16 year old Rookie Raiveneth Penarubia 1:03.96. UE Veteran Carmela Leonardo was third in 1:05.87.

Run for Change’s Janry Ubas, 18 took the Gold in the Mens High Jump with 1.95m equalling his personal best.

Dave Gumacal (UST) out dipped his more illustrious team mate Lambert Padua in the mens 5k walk winning 24:45.47 to 24:45.78.

In what was a weak long jump field as all the performances were more than a meter from the UAAP Record, Aldee Denuyo of UST  improved her own best performance to emerge the champion over powering some of her much more fancied opponents with 5.13m.

Micah Sibayan (ADMU) heaved the discus to 37.96m to carry on Ateneo strong tradition of throwers.

.

High School Records Fall

Matt Crespo of Ateneo High School became the youngest member of the 40m+ club in the Hammer when he shattered his UAAP record of 33.23m last February with a heave of 41.18m.  While Kyle Davidson ran 4:31.06 to break his own UAAP Boys 1500m Record. The UP Boys team of Mejia, Sangalang,  Morales and Domingo clocked 3:36.09 to break the uaap electronic record.

1982 Palarong Pambansa: 30 years on

Article by Pirie Enzo

.

Thirty Years ago the Palarong Pambansa was held in Zamboanga Del Norte in Dipolog City.  This would be the only time Dipolog ever held the Palarong Pambansa, although prior to this and afterwards Zamboanga would hold the games many times.

I have extracted the athletics page results from a complete document of the ’1982 Palarong Pambansa Report’ supplied to me by DECS (Department of Culture and Sports). Unlike other years copies which we will discuss later this copy is in quite good condition. It was done on a typewriter. Back then the Palarong Pambansa served as the default ‘National meet’ in place of the National Open or National Games. Their was no elementary grade just a ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ age category like the National Championships.

Looking through the results as a statistician gives wonderful insight into are athletics past as a primary document. It is clear there are alot of athletes over 20 years old competing in the junior categories.

.

Boys

Salvador Apa (born 1961) the winner of these didn’t progress as far later on which proves you don’t need to be the best at an early age to succeed later on. He did record 10.97 later that year. Esmeraldo Punelas (born 1965) who is 2nd in the Boys 200m (22.8) and (51.6) 400m later went onto run 21.89 in the sea games three years later, while Leopoldo Arnillo (born in 1960) for some reason is competing in the boys grade (23.3) 200m and won 400m (50.9) went onto 48.22s in April of that year (junior record now stripped). Arnillo also won the boys 400 Hurdles in 56.5, three years later in Bangkok Arnillo won the SEA Games title in 52.20. From 1981 to 1985 the Philippines enjoyed a continued streak in the 400m Hurdles Men with Grafilo, Unso, and Arnillo.

Surprisingly my old mentor, who we know as the ‘fat’ gun man from the National Championships Danilo Arpon is recorded here as the National Boys Champion in the 110m Hurdles (16.5). I recall Mr. Arpon telling me  he had been a champion Hurdler in his youth.

The versatile Jimmy Dela Torre won the boys 3km, 3000m steeples, 5k. Very interesting as Dela Torre at the age of eighteen the year before had won the SEA Games Marathon. Interesting that someone who beaten the best seniors in the region had stepped  back down into the junior division at their own national championships.

For some reason at the age of 21 Fidel Repiso is competing in the boys category, he won the Shotput and Discus (37.22). Repiso nine years later would throw 52.10m in the Mens Discus which is still the Philipine Record.

.

Girls

The Girls 100m tells an interesting story the legendary Elma Muros (12.7) need we say anymore won. Perla Balatucan (12.9) , the mother of  current sprinter Pearnel Lobos was second. Perla went onto represent the Philippines at the SEA Games and although not winning an individual medal, made several finals as a teenager and was part of medal winning relay teams.  Gina Socal (13.0) is third, Socal was part due to rumors regarding her gender. The late Leah Nolido (13.1), the mother of fil-heritage sprinter Princess Joy Griffey. Nolido went onto represent the Philippines at the ASEAN school games. The same four names in the same order are featured again for the 200m. Muros also won the long jump here.

Baltucan wins the 400m in 59.9, she later went on to record 56.23 3 years later.  Nene Gamo later  ‘Pellosis’ wins the 100m Hurdles (16.1) and 400m Hurdles. Gamo-Pellosis would later go on to win the SEA Games Heptathlon in 1987 and 1991.

.

Mens

Anselmo De Guzman aka. Butchoy gets second in the 100m here. In the 200m Marlon Pagaliluan a member of the 4x400m SEA Games Gold medal team wins the 200m in (22.0) from enato Unso (22.4) and Grafillo (22.8). Pagaliluan and Grafillo also place 1-2 in the 400m. Unso wins the 110m Hurdles (15.4) from Arnel Lobos (15.5) the other parent of Pearnel Lobos.  Unso, Grafillo, Lobos are 1-2-3 in the 400m Hurdles.

Dario De Rosas who would later become a national coach wins the Triple Jump. Manuel De Oro the father of Palarong discus thrower Maika ‘Kahn’ De Oro wins the Javelin and Pole Vault.

.

Womens

As 18-year-old Lydia De Vega steps up into seniors and wins in 11.7 (meet record), another later sea games medalist Elena Ganosa is second in 12.6, Lucila Tolentino and Salve Cambonga are also in this final.  De Vega also clocks a 24.0 (meet record) ahead of Ganosa. As well as this wins the 400m in 55.2 (meet record).

1983 Palarong Pambansa

Article by Pirie Enzo

The 1983 Palaro Pambansa was held in Tacloban, Leyte. This was the first time Eastern Visayas would get the honor of holding the prestigious multi-sport event. Some 26 years later Tacloban would again host the Palaro.

I have extracted the athletics page results from a complete document of the ’1983 Palarong Pambansa Report’ supplied to me by DECS (Department of Culture and Sports). This copy was in reasonable condition, with slight fading. It wasn’t faded though to the point without checking my stats and general knowledge of the time to piece together the names. It was done on a typewriter. Back then the Palarong Pambansa served as the default ‘National meet’ in place of the National Open or National Games. Their was no elementary grade just a ‘Junior’ and ‘Senior’ age category like the National Championships.

Looking through the results as a statistician gives wonderful insight into are athletics past as a primary document.

.

Mens

22-year-old Marlon Pagalilauan won the 100m (11.2), 200m(23.0) and 400m (52.4) the times were not fabulous. But Marlon did improve a lot later (21.6,200m) and became better known as a 400m runner (48.53,400m) who was part of the legendary 4x400m team that went on to set a still standing record of (3.06.58) at the SEA Games in Bangkok in 1985. Anselmo De Guzman (aka. Coach Butchoy) finished 3rd and 4th in the 100 and 200. Arnel Lobos who later became better known as a national 110m hurdler was 4th in the 400m and 400m Hurdles.

Renato Unso won the 110m Hurdles (15.9), he improved this by more than a second later in his career and later that year won the SEA Games 400m Hurdles. Leopoldo Arnillo won the 400m Hurdles (57.5) Arnillo became SEA Games Champion in this event two years later.

Now national coach Mario Castro won the Steeples (9.58.3). Castro did finish behind in the 5k and 10k. But later held the Mens 10k record for nearly two decades and also win the SEA Games title in 1985.

Dario De Rosas (former national coach) won the Mens Triple (14.10), with veteran Felicissimo Nierras nearing the end of his playing years third (Felicissimo was the father of 400 SEA Games Champ Julius Nierras). Dario also won the Pole Vault (3.70) ahead of Manuel De Oro on countback who had the same number of points.

Manuel De Oro (the father of Maika De Oro) won the Javelin (58.00)

.

Boys

Esmeraldo Punelas this time won the 100m title (11.4), and again denied of a win in the 200m (23.6), with unheralded Jeremias (surname faded) recording the same performance. The Long distance results are too faded to read.

Edward Tejada set a new meet record in the High Jump (1.95) (dob unavailable), however the current Palaro Record is recognized as 1.90m by Paolo Martinez set in 2002 Palaro. Fidel Repiso (born 1959) won the shot-put and discus, Repiso later became the national record holder in Discus.

.

Womens

16-year-old Elma Muros took the senior 100m title Palarong Pambansa title (13.0) in a rare win over 19-year-old Lydia De Vega (13.4). Elma also took 200m title (26.1). Distance and field events are too faded to read. Corazon Magante tied the high jump record with a leap of 1.60m. Delia Orguillas (1982) and Nanette Lusterio (1974) had recorded the same marks.

.

Girls

Gina Sucal who was the bronze medalist the previous year won the 100m title (13.4), Perla Balatucan (mother of Pearnel Lobos), Rhodo Sinoro (later 11.73 100 runner) Leah Nolido (mother of PJ Griffey) finished 2nd-4th. It was the same order in the 200m with Sucal winning in 26.3. Sucal also set a meet record in the 400m in 59.8.

Nene Gamo defended her 100 and 400 Hurdle titles, and added the long jump. Rowena Monton won the 3000m.

Victoria Paglinawan established a new record in the High Jump 1.57m.
